Ormond Beach, Florida is
known as the “birthplace of speed” and our Lodge adopted this as our
motto. The city of Ormond Beach was home to the “Gasoline Alley
Garage” until it burned down in1974. In the early 1900’s races and
automobile speed time trials were held on the beach at Ormond Beach
hence the cities motto. Racing pioneers, such as Charles and Frank
Duryea, R. E. Olds and Sir Malcolm Campbell and his famous car “The
Bluebird” sped on Ormond’s sand. The institution of the Ormond Beach Elks Lodge 2193 was held at the
Oceanside Country Club on Dec. 8, 1960. It was the 278 Florida
Lodge. The Lodge first met at the Veterans Social Club on West
Granada Blvd. and soon after moved to holding it’s meetings at “The
Crossed Palms Motel” on U.S.1. In 1962 the Lodge purchased it’s
first building located at 40 Corbin Ave., a former jelly factory.
Members worked hard cleaning and remodeling it for use as the Lodge
meeting place. In 1968, under the leadership of Exulted Ruler
Charles Whalen, the Lodge moved to its present location on Wilmette
Avenue. The facility originally housed “United Tile & Terrazzo Co.”
After major renovations and additions, it steadily grew in
membership. At the buildings’ official dedication there were over
200 people in attendance. The ceremony was followed by a dinner and
dancing. All who attended were very pleased at how far the Lodge had
come in such a short time. At this event there were many Grand Lodge
Officers, State of Florida dignitaries, as well as representatives
from other Lodges in the East Central District and from around the
State. Since the founding of the Lodge it has always met all the financial
obligations to Grand Lodge and to the Florida State Elks
Associations. Major projects include the Harry-Anna Children’s
Hospital, the Children’s Therapy Services and the Florida State Elks
Youth Camp. Ormond Beach Lodge has also provided local, State, and
National assistance and provisions to families in need from
disasters, sickness and Veterans needs. Although the Children’s
Hospital closed in 1997, it was sold and the money was put into the
Harry-Anna Trust Fund. This Fund now provides mobile therapy
services throughout the State of Florida. It consists of 20 fully
equipped vans and certified therapists who travel to the homes of
disabled children and provide free therapy services to those in
need. Ormond Beach Elks funded the van for our District. The Fund
also operates the accredited Youth Camp in Eumatila, FL for which
Ormond Beach Lodge provided the funding of one cabin and other camp
needs. We continue to support these worthy projects.
The Lodge takes great pride in
our own scholarship program which blossomed in 1987 under the then
Lodge secretary Joseph N. Wright, presenting annual gifts of at
least $1000.00 to deserving local high school seniors.
The Lodge allows RV parking over
night in its parking lot. There are no hook-ups so RV’s need to be
self contained. All Elks are welcomed as you travel up and down the
East coast of Florida.
The Lodge’s Past District
Deputies are Charles Whalen, Joseph Deckelman and Michael Chandler.
The Ormond Beach Elks Lodge
